crestAttendance and Punctuality

Year 7 – 10

Organisation of the school day

Classes begin at 8.50 amevery day and we recommend students arrive at school at least ten minutes before the bell. Classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday finish at 3.00 pm. On Tuesday school finishes at 2.30 pm after sport and on Thursday school finishes at 2.15 pm.

Each day is divided into six periods. These periods are for your different subjects which are taught by specialist teachers.

The day is organised in a 2-2-2 period pattern. Periods 1 and 2 are followed by recess which gives you time to eat, drink, go to the toilet and see friends. Periods 3 and 4 are followed by lunch. After lunch you go to Periods 5 and 6.

Recording attendance

The main school roll is marked at the beginning of Period 1. A class roll is marked by every teacher each period. You must be on time to class. Punctuality and attendance every day are very important for success at school. Every day school staff ring a number of students at home to check why they are absent from school.

Lateness

If you are late you must report to the front office to record your attendance time of arrival. Do not attend classes without doing this or you will be marked absent for that particular day. Punctuality is important and any lateness is recorded on your attendance record.

Truancy

It is your responsibility to attend every lesson. If you do not, the fractional (period) truancy will be recorded on your attendance record. You will be placed on school detention and a letter will be sent to your parents/caregivers. Students who are absent from class are reported to the office immediately.

Leave of absence

When you are absent you must apply for leave. It is your responsibility to do this with a note or medical certificate on the day you return to school. If you do not do this your Attendance Record shows an unexplained absence. You must submit this note or medical certificate to your first period teacher at the time of roll marking.

Early leave

If you must leave early for a good reason, you must bring a note from home and take it a Deputy Principal for verification and then to the front office before Period 1 between 8.30am and 8.45am so you can receive an Early Leaver’s Pass.

Reporting of your attendance and punctuality

Your attendance is checked every day and also reviewed at a meeting every fortnight with the Deputy Principal, Year Adviser and School Counsellor.

A computer printout of your attendance will be attached to your reportfor your parents/caregivers to read.

You will also receive an Excellent Attendance Certificatefor each term that you have excellent attendance. This is a valuable asset when seeking employment.

There are occasions when you will be allowed to leave early without any absence recorded against your name.

Completion of timetabled periods
As a Year 12 senior student you are allowed to leave school after you have attended your last timetabled lesson on Sport Day only.

Absent teacher and cancelled sport
You are allowed to leave school if your teacher is absent for your final timetabled lesson for the day.  You must, however, check with the relevant Head Teacher to find out whether a relief teacher has been assigned to your class.  If Tuesday sport is cancelled senior students (Year 11 and 12) are allowed to go home from the start of lunchtime.

Non-timetabled periods
These are for private study and work.  Students must be in the library and go to the Learning Centre.  The teacher will mark the roll and you must stay working in the library or the Learning Centre for the whole period.  You must not leave early so you can go to the canteen.

You are to stay at school at all times between your first and last timetabled lesson.  You are not to leave the school under any circumstances without permission.  If you do leave, you will be recorded as truanting.  The school is legally required to supervise you during the time you are timetabled to be at school.
